Every year when we go to Florida the boys love to collect things. Crabs, shells, broken shells, whole shells, coral, glass...whatever they can find. This year we hit the motherload on shells thanks to a helpful tip from a friend who has also been to Destin quite a few times. Any one that has been to Destin knows there are not usually ANY shells on any beaches to collect. I am not sure why or if the beaches are just picked over from travelers or if someone from the city actually comes every morning and picks up. Either way, there are usually no shells to be found. Until we heard of the Jetty East. Another small section of beach right by a jetty and virtually shells everywhere. You have to actually watch your step so not to cut your foot on a shell. I did it. On my toe. Shocker, I know, to anyone that knows me. We found big shells, small shells, really cool shaped shells, and coral. Very strange shaped coral. I had to bring this certain piece of coral home because it was just too funny. No explanation needed.
Their most favorite item to collect while in Florida is crabs. Almost every night we collect our flashlights, nets, and bare feet and head to the water. I love this time of night. It is so incredibly peaceful on the beach. There is no loud music and no drinking, just mostly families with young kids and their flashlights out hunting. This year we hit paydirt. Steven actually entered the water (at prime shark feeding time) and scoured the bottom of the ocean with a net. I couldn't believe how many he came up with this year. The first night he probably got close to 20. Everyone was walking over to see our loot since Owen could be heard hooting and hollering for miles around. The ocean echo's his yells!
Now that we know the secrets to crab hunting and shell picking we will surely continue these two traditions next time we visit Florida!
